Get involved in something positive

As I’ve explained in earlier posts, I was most comfortable and content sitting on the couch. Spending time with others was the last thing I wanted to do. Due to the urging of friends and family members I started getting out more.

Researchers have conducted numerous studies showing that being involved with others increases the chance of bouncing back from depression faster.

Getting involved for me was a gradual process. At first, I was afraid to talk about my depression and health issues. I was ashamed and scared about what people would think. Once I realized my experience could help people it was easier for me to open up.

It was very natural for me to isolate myself from others. Building a wall and keeping others out seemed desirable. To be more realistic, I constructed a fortress to keep everyone out including my family. I would occasionally open the drawbridge and allow people into the kingdom. On other occasions, I would open the window blinds and peer out, but still remained isolated by my choice.

Isolation doesn’t beat depression. Set boundaries, BUT get involved.
