Keep an open mind concerning medications

I hated the idea of meds from Day 1. In fact, when I was first diagnosed I didn't go home and start medication. A week or two went by. The struggle continued and wanted to sleep most days. With the urging of family and wanting to get better, I went back to the doctor.

At this doctor visit, we discovered I was suffering from hypothyroidism. This physiological condition could explain the anxiety and depression that was plaguing me.

As it became more and more apparent to me that medication was on the horizon for me, I consulted my sister. She is a chiropractor. She recommended supplements to help balance my gaba, dopamine and serotonin levels.

I started the supplements and although I didn’t want to admit it. I needed something that would work quicker.

Once on the medications, I wasn't magically happy. The first few weeks I felt like I was in a fog. I didn't think my mind was as sharp as it was. My motivation wasn't there.

As with any type of medication, communicate with your doctor and they may be different meds you can be on. It is also important to note some of the prescribed meds may cause other symptoms.

Keep an open mind when being prescribed medication. Medication is helpful in many instances and most prescription medications aren’t addictive. Don’t be afraid of medication. Discuss the options with your doctor, counselor and support team.
